Father and Son…

October 19th, 2006

This is one of the most touching articles/videos i have ever come across. It’s a story about a father and a son and the trials, tribulations and love thay have gone through for one another. Here is a video about the 2 of them, but please read the article, it will put things in full light…

Now continue with the article.

[From Sports Illustrated, By Rick Reilly]

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay For their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he’s pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in Marathons. Eight times he’s not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a Wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and Pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars–all in the same day.

Dick’s also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back Mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. On a bike. Makes Taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much–except save his life.
This love story began in Winchester , Mass. , 43 years ago, when Rick Was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him Brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

“He’ll be a vegetable the rest of his life;'’ Dick says doctors told him And his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an Institution.'’

But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes Followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the Engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was Anything to help the boy communicate. “No way,'’ Dick says he was told. “There’s nothing going on in his brain.'’

“Tell him a joke,'’ Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a Lot was going on in his brain. Rigged up with a computer that allowed Him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his Head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? “Go Bruins!'’ And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the School organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, “Dad, I want To do that.'’

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described “porker'’ who never ran More than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he Tried. “Then it was me who was handicapped,'’ Dick says. “I was sore For two weeks.'’

That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,'’ he typed, “when we were running, It felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!'’

And that sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly Shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

“No way,'’ Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren’t quite a Single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few Years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then They found a way to get into the race Officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the Qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, “Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?'’

How’s a guy who never learned to swim and hadn’t ridden a bike since he Was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick Tried.

Now they’ve done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii . It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud Getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don’t you Think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you’d do on your own? “No way,'’ he says. Dick does it purely for “the awesome feeling'’ he gets seeing Rick with A cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best Time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992–only 35 minutes off the world Record, which, in case you don’t keep track of these things, happens to Be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the Time.

“No question about it,'’ Rick types. “My dad is the Father of the Century.'’

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a Mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries Was 95% clogged. “If you hadn’t been in such great shape,'’ One doctor told him, “you probably would’ve died 15 years ago.'’ So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other’s life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass. , always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father’s Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.

“The thing I’d most like,'’ Rick types, “is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.'’

-On a personal note, i have always had a strong relationship with my own father. Sure i was never the best son, and he was never the best dad but im his son and he’s my dad and we would both go to hell and back for each other even though we never show it. Family is the only thing we have in the world that we can/should be able to count on. So show your love when you can, you’ll never know when you can’t anymore.

When I watched this, I felt such glory going to Jesus in Heaven, because this is what Jesus did for all for us….He took all the pain and suffering for our sins so we could get the “ride home”

[…] When you read what this father has done for his son, and still does almost every weekend, then I hope you are as moved as I was. It’s quite unbelievable the dedication involved, and yet I can imagine it being all worth it when you see how happy the son is at the end of the video. The Doctors said: Put him in an institution! The parents said: NO
The Doctors said: Nothing is getting to his brain.
The parents said: Wait and Watch.
In the Lord’s Prayer we say Thy will be done.
It has been done. This handsome young man showed the world that the Doctors were wrong and God was right.
With the help of his great father, Dick, Rick has shown the world, With the help of God, anything is possible. Foodog, maybe you can ask God for help, for you need it. My prayers are with you all even foodog

It’s 5AM and I can’t sleep. So I sit here crying as I read this story. I am missing my son - the everday teenager - whom I have lost touch with. He has chosen to live with his father. A good man - mind you - but not one who will feel tears well up in his eyes as he would read a heartfelt, real life story - like this one. Me? I’m all emotion - and I wish I could reach my son and share the gift of kindess, compassion, unconditional love and acceptance for mankind. Maybe - someday……

  22. andre Says:

    They are both heroes.

  23. directionzero Says:

Why are you religious nuts all over this like it has something to do with God or Jesus? I dont see the connection whatsoever. This is about a bond between a father and a son, I dont see how this has anything to do with religion.

  24. Maji Says:

Dick and Rick are both amazing. God Bless them!
Directionzero, your name says it all. God is everywhere and in everything. I pray that someday you open your eyes and heart to him.

  26. Jerry Anderson Says:

There is no greater love than a one gives thier life for another. To give in any form is the greatest example of love this world will see, and it makes our daily trials and tribulations seem so miniscule, as grain of sand on a beach.

  27. Trish Reilly Says:

My physical accomplishments don’t even make it past the start line for Dick! So selfless! Wow!

  28. Vic Simard Says:

I have three friends who were told the same thing about their children. One of these children, a boy remains unable to care for himself, but has been a strong influence for good in his family and those who know them.

The second, also a boy, lives independently (with help from family and friends) and is a constant reminder of the love of the family and community.

The third, a girl, and a close friend of my middle daughter, graduated from High School with her class and later received a Masters Degree from Utah State University.

The early days neighbors took turns helping with physical therapy for these children, everyone involved benefited from the experience.

Being a parent is never easy, but these four people have been “super parents” I know that because the lord has told us “My people must be tried in all things, that they may be prepared to receive the glory that I have for them” They will truly be rewarded.

  29. Tap3w0rm Says:

Wow you god freaks need to STFU stop takeing everythign as this HUGE ohh god yea god. God did nothign here. If you want to say god did anythign it’s god strangled this kid and caused him damage. The father then had faith in his child (not god).

God is a myth. Most myths are based on some form of reality. So god may exist.

Stop with the OHHgod … here is a story. A friend went down town telling everyone god bless you in high school on one side of the street. I went down the other saying satan bless you. I was arrested for disturbing the peace. Witch one of us was more wrong .. answer neither of us.

    Now that’s an interesting story.

    so STFU

    Loves and kisses Tap3w0rm

    May satan bless you

  30. Ray Says:

Tap3wOrm - you are a sick person and I can only hope you find God before you die, unless you really want to burn in Hell, but then maybe you want to. Good luck to you - you will need it!

  33. Romeo Says:

Love can move mountains. What an indefatigable love of a father to a son. The love that can be liken to the love our heavenly father that he will never leave us nor forsake us. May this be an inspiration to those fathers out there who work doubly hard for the money but little time for the family. We can’t bring back time. Time is of the essense. If there is anything that we can do or share with our sons and daughters (our family) let’s do it now let’s not defer it for we shall not pass this way again.

  34. Connie Says:

    Awsome

  35. ANgel Says:

Truly inspiring to see what can be accomplished when you put your mind to it. Although nothing happens without the Lord. He is truly in everything and everyone, and he is absolutely in both of you. God Bless you!!!

  36. Acidtrip Says:

    STOP MAKING EVERYTHING ABOUT GOD!!
tap3worm is right, this is a remarkable and touching story, but god didnt do this.
the love and bond between father and son did.
god has absolutely nothing to do with this so just be thankfull that there are still people who care about shit in this world.

    (by the way…satan bless you)

This is a very heartwarming story. Gives me hope for the human race. I think it’s interesting how the nay-sayers above found it necessary to express themselves in expletives and cannot spell simple English words correctly. Says a lot for where they have come from and where they are headed in this life.

  38. 彼岸 » Truely Powerful Videos Says:

Alright, there has been a lot of god loving and god hating going on about this story. Now i don’t moderate any comments and wont ever (unless it is spam). But lets get one thing straight, for the people giving grief because people are praising god about this, just let them do it in peace… everyone has the right to believe how they want in peace. For those of you that are griefing the non-believers… well i’m one of them, i don’t believe in god anymore, we had a falling out some time ago, but you must respect that not everyone is going to see this story as a miracle from god; some people will just see it as perseverance.
This man and his son have gone through a lot, and not once in this article does it mention his religious beliefs… you know why? because it doesn’t matter. So just realize this is only heart warming story about a father and son bonding and not a story of a miracle. Now please, enjoy yourselves.

It’s hard for me to see the screen, my eyes are filled with tears. How does any father compete with this much commitment, love, devotion, to any degree…(my thought) start now. Whoever you are, wherever you are. If you are a dad, hug your child a little more, spend five more minutes with them, hopefully it will breech a limit that you’ve never reached. As John Lennon said,”All you need is love”… I think that rings true…here.

  45. alvin Says:

    it`s really a good story

  46. Taevyen Says:

This story is touching.. what the man did for his son is nothing less than beautiful. The video and story alike are a testament to the potential greatness of man when he puts others before himself. Love is without a doubt the greatest force in this world. However, that being said, I fail to see the correlation between the story and god. Yes, it’s touching, but there is no divine intervention here.. just a man and the love he has for his son. If you cannot be open minded enough to see that not everyone shares your belief system, especially when it comes to religion, then it is you.. not them that needs help. God.. maybe he does exist, maybe he doesn’t. Unfortunately, human beings have no proof to substantiate either idea. However, for as much good as religion does in this world, it is responsible for far more death, destruction, and evil than it has ever saved. Think about the wars throughout history. How many of these wars have been fought over religion? How many people have died for an idea?

    My point?

Let humans be worldly, don’t bring god into every astounding accomplishment of man. Likewise, don’t bring satan into every piece of evil in this world. You are no better than them for refusing to accept the fact that everyone on this world doesn’t think like you do.
